Innovation separates market leaders from followers, and Flavio Maluf has built Eucatex’s competitive advantage on the ability to anticipate consumer needs before they become obvious. His approach to product development combines market observation, customer insight, and willingness to take calculated risks.

“Every consumer of a particular product always seeks novelty,” explains Flavio Maluf. “The key is trying to anticipate trends.” This philosophy drove Eucatex’s development of revolutionary products like the Square line of laminate flooring—Brazil’s first square laminate floor in large format.

The Square line, launched in 2024, features unprecedented dimensions of 90.6 x 90.6 cm. While large-format square tiles were common in ceramics, no one had successfully produced them in laminate flooring. Flavio Maluf saw an opportunity others missed: “We anticipated something we perceived really had demand.”

This innovation was possible due to Eucatex’s proprietary HPP substrate—a high-density eucalyptus wood panel that provides superior dimensional stability and resistance. The technology enables larger formats impossible with standard materials, giving Eucatex a significant competitive advantage.

The Square line won the “Best in Show” award at Expo Revestir 2024 in the “Best Laminate Floor” category. For Flavio Maluf, this recognition validated the strategy of leading rather than following market trends. “The same appreciation that happened in the ceramic market can be transferred to the laminate market,” he explains.

Innovation at Eucatex doesn’t emerge randomly. Flavio Maluf maintains a disciplined approach to idea generation. He reads industry magazines, monitors internet trends, and visits retail points to observe related products. These observations fuel discussions with his team about which concepts to pursue.

Even during personal time, the executive remains alert to innovation opportunities. “When I’m not at the office, I look everywhere for something different,” Maluf says. “On weekends, when I’m surfing the internet for relaxation, I’m also looking for ideas I can apply at work.”

This constant vigilance paid off with other recent innovations. The Acqua New baseboard line combines fine wood particles from certified reforestation forests with plastic resin (PVC), creating Wood Polymer Composite (WPC). This product offers waterproof properties, high durability, and 100% recyclability—addressing growing consumer demand for sustainable building materials.

Another breakthrough came with the BP Poro SuperMatt finish for MDF and MDP panels. Flavio Maluf brought this European technology to the Americas, incorporating visual and tactile variation that mimics natural wood characteristics with remarkable realism. The Wood Touch technology creates surfaces that feel authentically like natural wood while minimizing fingerprint marks.

The executive acknowledges that innovation involves risk. “The failure rate is directly proportional to growth ambition,” he notes. “There were several products released over the years that didn’t work, but some did, and the balance was and is positive. Recognizing your limitations is more important than recognizing your abilities.”

This balanced perspective allows Eucatex to maintain an aggressive innovation pipeline without betting the company on any single product. Flavio Maluf’s management approach involves testing ideas, gathering market feedback, and quickly pivoting when necessary.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Flavio Maluf offers direct advice: stay ahead of trends, particularly in sustainability. “Products that are natural and environmentally friendly are on the rise in all business areas. This is the way forward for almost all production.”

Through persistent observation, strategic risk-taking, and disciplined execution, Flavio Maluf has established Eucatex as an innovation leader in Brazil’s construction and furniture industries.
